A Success Story in Business-to-Business Mentorship: An Example of Technical Assistance Services
When I began working with LOCUS Impact Investing, a CDFI focused on the 14 counties of Southwest Virginia, I knew that supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs would require more than just capital—it would require connections, mentorship, and long-term sustainability strategies. Rural entrepreneurs often face unique challenges: limited access to funding, the need for specialized industry knowledge, and the difficulty of navigating an ever-changing business landscape.
One of the most impactful initiatives I had the privilege of supporting was the Business-to-Business (B2B) Mentor Program. Designed to bridge the gap between established business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, this program became a game-changer for local businesses in Tazewell, Buchanan, and surrounding counties.
The Challenge
Small business owners in Southwest Virginia often operate in isolated environments, making it difficult to gain insights from seasoned professionals. Many entrepreneurs had the drive and vision but lacked access to practical, hands-on business guidance—especially in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, and retail.
The Solution: A Business Mentorship Model
Through my consulting role, I helped develop, structure, and launch a Business-to-Business Mentor Program that:
✅ Matched experienced business owners with emerging entrepreneurs for one-on-one coaching
✅ Facilitated monthly peer-learning roundtables where participants shared challenges, strategies, and resources
✅ Created a knowledge-sharing network that allowed entrepreneurs to exchange marketing strategies, financial management tips, and business growth techniques
✅ Partnered with LOCUS and local economic development leaders to connect business owners with funding opportunities, technical assistance, and new markets
The Impact
🔹 Increased Business Success Rates: Entrepreneurs who participated in the program saw an increase in business sustainability and growth.
🔹 New Business Formation & Expansion: Several mentorship participants went on to expand their operations or start new ventures, benefiting from the guidance and connections they made.
🔹 Stronger Local Economy: By fostering B2B connections, the program strengthened the overall business ecosystem in Southwest Virginia, encouraging more local spending, partnerships, and job creation.
🔹 A Sustainable Support System: The program wasn’t just a one-time initiative—it created a lasting mentorship culture in the region, ensuring that experienced business owners continue supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Looking Ahead
The success of this mentorship initiative has reinforced my belief that collaboration is the key to revitalizing rural economies. By leveraging local expertise and strengthening networks, we can help small businesses thrive, create jobs, and build stronger communities in Southwest Virginia and beyond.
